Power BI: make workforce costs easier to explore

Power BI can give Finance, HR and operational leaders a shared view of workforce information, provided the data model is trustworthy.

Where it adds value

Power BI supports interactive reporting and data visualisation. It can bring payroll data into reports that let authorised readers explore trends by period, entity or cost centre. Row-level security can restrict data visibility in supported configurations when correctly implemented.

The business benefit

A leader can investigate whether rising labour cost reflects more people, more hours, higher rates or a different workforce mix. Leave liability and overtime trends can inform planning rather than wait for year-end review.

Build the foundations first

Agree metric definitions and reconcile source totals before publishing. Set access roles, test them and confirm licensing, refresh arrangements and data-source permissions. A dashboard that refreshes successfully can still contain an incorrect calculation or an inappropriate level of detail.

A practical example

Show overtime hours and cost side by side, with filters for department and period. Include a reconciliation total and an explanation of back-pay treatment. Aggregate employee information where detailed records are unnecessary.

How SESAY can help

SESAY can define payroll measures, prepare reconciled data and develop Power BI reporting where included in scope. We work with the client’s IT and Finance owners on access, refresh and ongoing responsibility; Power BI does not replace the payroll engine.
